The Politics and Possibilities of Sound in Media

 Phenomenology of place as a mindful representation in Space_03 – Hector Centeno Garcia, York University 

Hector Centeno Garcia’s focus is on the aesthetic potential of immersive digital sound, visual and interactive experiences that seek to engage the audience into a reflection of existence, place relationship and the phenomenology of place. Among his artistic activities are national and international presentations of multi-channel sound art, interactive installation art, live sound and video performances, virtual reality experiences, virtual cinematography (virtual production), and virtual photography. The organizations he has been involved with include New Adventures in Sound Art (as Technical Director), Impossible Things (as Technology Director) and multiple independent interactive media artists. 

On “Sonic Fields of Reflection” – Mojeanne Behzadi, Independent Curator 

Mojeanne Behzadi is a curator and poet based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal. She is currently the director of Art Speaks, an international contemporary art lecture series and the curator of research and programs at Artexte. Mojeanne holds an MA in Art History from Concordia University and works as an independent curator on numerous projects. She recently developed and hosted the Trajectories podcast for the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and curated Spillover Love at the Stewart Hall Art Gallery in Pointe-Claire, a group show presented in the summer of 2021. Her current curatorial research focuses on community practices as a framework for resistance, mobilization and social transformation. 

Teaching the Politics of Representation through Listening to Film - Randolph Jordan, Champlain College 

Randolph Jordan teaches in the Humanities department at Champlain College in Montreal. His research, teaching, and creative practice reside at the intersections of sound ecology, media studies, and critical geography. He has published widely on the ways in which the fields of acoustic ecology and film sound studies can inform each other, with a recent emphasis on the cinemas of British Columbia. He has co-edited a collection with Milena Droumeva entitled Sound, Media, Ecology (Palgrave 2019). His monograph, Acoustic Profiles: A Sound Ecology of the Cinema, is forthcoming from Oxford University Press. 

Moderator: Dhvani Ramanujam is a PhD student in the Cinema and Media Studies program at York University. Her research and curatorial practice focuses on experimental moving image, particularly attuned to queer, feminist, and speculative archival practices in contemporary exhibitions. Her curatorial interests also extend to sound art and multi-sensorial experiences more broadly; in 2021 she curated places where sounds turn to dreams…a multimedia group exhibition in Toronto that centred artists who engage with sonic ecologies and world-making in their practices, and in 2022, served as co-chair of the annual Communication and Culture graduate conference and art exhibition on the theme “The Politics of Sound,” co-hosted by York University and Toronto Metropolitan University. She is also a graduate research associate at Sensorium: Centre for Digital Arts and Technology.
